Lets start by getting it running

OK - the first thing we are going to shoot for is just getting the truck running. The truck has been garaged for a few years and while it has been started occasionally, it won't start now, and it has been a while since it has really run.

Here are a couple pics of the engine compartment:

The tags on the spark plug wires I added to help make sure I knew which wire went to which plug.

I have removed the blow-by oil air filter from the top of the carburetor

My plan to get the truck running is this:
1) Change the oil
2) Drain and clean the fuel tank
3) Drain the fuel lines
4) Replace the oil & fuel filters
5) Clean or replace the spark plugs
6) Replace the battery
7) Try to start the truck and troubleshoot from there

I have already drained the fuel lines and pulled the spark plugs. I have also confirmed that the fuel pump is operating. The spark plugs were a little black:

I'm not sure if they are black from burning oil, or from the repeated starting without running the engine hot. Anyone have any thoughts?

For now, I have cleaned them and put them back in. I plan on buying new ones in the near future, but I should be able to start the truck with them now that they are clean.

Tomorrow I will change out the fluids and give it a shot!

Put some PB penetrating Catalyst or (PB blaster) Down each of the cylinders and let it sit for a couple hours. PB Blaster is magic on rusted or seized nuts and bolts you can get it at Checker auto parts. Also pick up some starter fluid it will help you get it started til you tune the carb.

Thanks Carter! We have starting fluid and we are heading to Napa this morning for some other stuff.

you might want to shove a rag in the carb to prevent any wayward nuts or bolts from entering your carb, then your intake, then your block. cause then you have to take the head off to get it.

I had similar trouble getting my 54 starting... Would run on starting fluid but would not prime the carburetor so I loosened my fuel line at the fuel pump and got my air compressor out and at low air pressure I blew the gas line clear reattached the line to the fuel pump, loosened the line to the carburetor then blew gas through the line... This got everything primed... Tightened the lines up and it fired right up... Be sure to check your gas tank to make sure there is not any dirt or rust in it while you have it out of the cab... My nephews many years ago when they were little dropped rocks and dirt down it... If it has been sitting for a while drain the old gas out and get fresh gas...
